“Among my Dakota and Absaroke people is a saying
 that I can only really translate into English
using a double negative:
‘I do not remember a time when I did not know him.’

It is intended to point out and compliment
one who has had a good, significant impact on another,
an impact so great that one’s history is changed.

That is what I say to you, Carter,
I do not remember when I did not know you.”
